About us

Welcome to the Rainbow Chorus! We are the largest community LGBTQ+ SATB choir in the south-east outside of London. Based in Brighton & Hove we have been celebrating diversity through music since 1997. We welcome people from all sections of our community.

 

We offer an enjoyable, supportive and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ members to sing, develop their community spirit and awareness, and enable individuals to develop their talents, skills and confidence.

 

Through public performance, we enhance the profile of LGBTQ+ people, particularly in Brighton and Hove, and contribute to the quality and range of community events. We believe that singing at events such as World Aids Day and TransPride sends a clear message that we are out and proud and all different. As part of our commitment to the local community, we also support other charities by singing to help them raise funds.

 

Join the Choir

Anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ is welcome to join us. There are two ways to join the Rainbow Chorus family:

Join Rainbow Chorus

The Rainbow Chorus is a community choir with high standards that rehearses weekly on a Monday evening with additional rehearsals on some weekends. We have New Members Nights twice a year (January and September) with no obligation to join and no audition, although there is an expectation that you can sing in tune.

 

Join RC+

If you have less free time, or want to improve your singing voice in a less formal setting, our monthly RC+ sessions are loads of fun and a safe space where you can learn some great songs by ear, with sheet music and lyrics to aid if needed. 

Choir News

Our next New Members Session will be on Saturday 12th September 2026, and we’d love to meet you. To book your slot, just drop our membership team an email at membership@rainbowchorus.org.uk.
 

During your visit, our Musical Director will have a relaxed, informal listen to your voice to help find the choir section that suits you best. Afterwards, you’ll be invited to join our RC+ taster session, led by our MD, so you can get a feel for what singing with us is like.
 

What to Expect at the New Members Session

You’ll be given a time slot for your short voice placement meeting (about 5 minutes). This takes place in a separate room so Aneesa, our MD, can focus on your voice and consider how it fits within the choir.
 

If you have a song you’d like to sing, brilliant - but it’s absolutely fine if you don’t.
 

There’s no need to feel nervous. The session is friendly, relaxed and supportive. A member of the membership team will be there too, so you can chat afterwards if you’d like.
 

Once the music team has listened to everyone, they’ll decide whether you’re best suited to the Rainbow Chorus or our monthly RC+ choir, and which voice part fits you. We’ll let you know the outcome by Thursday 17th September.
 

While voice placements are happening, you’ll have the chance to meet current choir members, ask questions, and chat about music, LGBTQ+ life, and anything else you’re curious about.
 

Your Commitment Expectations

Rainbow Chorus is a community choir with high musical standards, and we want to make sure you feel confident about what’s involved. If the weekly commitment feels a bit much, our monthly RC+ choir might be a better fit - just ask the membership team for more info. You don't need to have a voice placement if you want to come to RC+.
 

To perform in our two main concerts each year (plus festivals, community events and charity performances), you’ll need to:
 

  • Sing in tune and confidently hold your assigned voice part.
  • Attend at least 75% of rehearsals (Monday evenings, plus 2–3 weekend rehearsals per term)
  • Join pre‑rehearsal sectionals (1–2 per term, Mondays 6.30–7.30) and attend ad‑hoc sectionals when possible
  • Join three RC+ sessions during your first term
     

We also ask all members to follow our membership policies. Rainbow Chorus is a safe, inclusive space for all LGBTQ+ people, and discrimination is never tolerated.
 

There’s a 3‑month trial period, giving both you and the choir time to make sure your voice part and choir placement feel right.
